Post reblogged from Random Thoughts By Bassey... with 33 notes
Though she has been a writer and mental health advocate for years, it was the death of her friend, 15 year-old Siwe Monsanto, that sparked The Siwe Project’s founder, Bassey Ikpi, to do something more. Siwe’s decision to take her life speaks to the dangers of not knowing how to deal with mental illness. Dangers that are especially pronounced in the global black community where mental illness is often stigmatized and misunderstood. The Siwe Project seeks to help educate, raise awareness and encourage all to seek treatment without shame. And to let people like Siwe know, You Are Not Alone. Please join us on December 14, 2011, at 9pm, at Tabaq Bistro as we celebrate our launch and our mission with music, drinks, and special invited guests.$10 suggested donationFollow us on twitter @thesiweproject
