I wasn’t going to say much about this until I read that HONY took down the post after 1000 comments, but this is utter bullshit.
As a Black woman who lives in a Brooklyn community with lots of orthodox Jewish neighbors, I cannot tell you how many times I have been minding my own business, reading a book on a park bench and propositioned by Hasidic men. They start with a friendly “hello” and move into trying to question me about my bills and if I need “help.” I used to shut them down by saying “let me call my husband and you can ask him,” but since I’m no longer married, I inform them that what they are doing is illegal (soliciting prostitution, albeit slickly) and that I’ll call the police. They usually mumble about a misunderstanding and run off quickly.
Once this happened as I was watching my child play with some other children in a playground a mere six blocks from my home, and I cursed him, asking him if this is some new version of Tikkun Olam? Asking him if this is how he “repairs the world” by trying to get me to fuck him? I asked him was harassing women in the ketubah he and his wife signed? Then I suggested he visit the mitzvah tank down the block because he was obviously in need of some healing. He blinked and ran away.
And now that the neighborhood is gentrifying and I’ve watched them try to approach white women as they are jogging, walking their dogs, or sitting on a bench, much like I do, I bet this will make more news.
It’s not a secret to Black and brown women in places where there are heavy orthodox populations.
This happens to us all the time and comes from everywhere…family members, strangers, folks we are supposed to trust. And as a mama of an amazing daughter, let someone try some shit with my child, his bloody nutsack will be his dinner.
