My thoughts on Frank Ocean’s open letter, in a nutshell.
The music industry is full of homophobia, yet laden with closeted artists. I find that interesting in an arena where being your true self is supposed to be encouraged—as long as it doesn’t make anyone uncomfortable.
Your favorite artist is probably in the closet. That should never change how you feel about their music.
I don’t want to see this made into a big deal, but unfortunately, it will be. It is. Sadly, we live in an age where, if you’re black and queer, you’re susceptible to discrimination. Higher rates of suicide. Homelessness. So, someone being themselves is celebrated, and also scrutinized.
The letter was obviously necessary for him to continue his growth as a human being, and an artist. Imagine how free he feels right now. Why deny him that? Why say you’d rather he kept this to himself, because you want to continue listening to his music? Do you know how foolish you sound? The feelings about your own sexuality that you never confronted are showing.
I’m rambling now, and this is turning into a patented, hippie “love everyone, man, peace” Ziggy-type post.
Hopefully, y’all get what I’m saying. Good for Frank.
Yet another reason why Ziggy is one of my favorite people.
ZAA-GEEEE-YAAAAAHHH!!!
I’m buying Frank Ocean’s album, sound unheard, as soon as it comes out, on general principle.
