Octavia Butler: Oh, no. I had one choice, well two choices: I could become a writer or I could die very young. There was nothing else I really wanted. 

Charlie Rose: What was it about writing for you?

Octavia Butler: You’ve got to make your own worlds. You’ve got to write yourself in. Whether you are a part of the greater society or not, you get to write yourself in. So, I get to write myself in.
